In the Dragon Ball series, they look for orbs

Bulma searches for the Dragon Balls and meets Goku

Akira Toriyama created the Dragon Ball series in 1984 in Japan. The first manga, written and illustrated by Toriyama, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995. Shueisha collected 519 individual chapters in 42 volumes. Dragon Ball series was influenced by Hong Kong martial arts films and the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. Son Goku’s adventures as he grows up and trains in martial arts are chronicled in this anime series. Until he meets Bulma, a teenage girl, he spends his childhood on the outskirts of civilization. She encourages him to keep looking for the seven Dragon Balls, which summon a dragon that grants wishes when they are collected. During his journey, Goku makes many more friends, becomes a family man, discovers his alien heritage, and battles a wide variety of villains. Unfortunately, many of them are also looking for the Dragon Balls.

The development of the manga

The Toriyama manga was adapted and split into two anime series produced by Toei Animation: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, which aired in Japan from 1986 to 1996. In addition, the studio developed 20 animated feature films and three television specials. As well as two anime sequel series Dragon Ball GT in 1996 and Dragon Ball Super in 2015. Dragon Ball Kai, a reimagined version of Dragon Ball Z, aired in Japan from 2009 to 2015. Closely follows the manga’s story by removing most of the material found exclusively in the anime. Several companies have created a variety of merchandise based on the series, which has resulted in a large multimedia franchise. That includes animated and live-action films, collectible trading card games, numerous action figures, several soundtrack collections, and numerous video games. As a result, the Dragon Ball series has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises.

The Dragon Ball series includes Goku on multiple occasions

Earth is inhabited by terrestrials, which refers to intelligent races native to the planet, including humans, anthropomorphic, and monsters. Starting with the Dragon Ball Z series, various extraterrestrial species such as Saiyans and Nameks have played a more prominent role in the media franchise. The majority of the Dragon Ball series revolves around Goku’s exploits; after meeting Bulma at the start of the series, the two embark on an adventure to collect the seven Dragon Balls. Later on, Goku receives martial arts instruction from Master Roshi. Next, he meets his lifelong friend Krillin. Then, he enters the World Martial Arts Tournament to compete against the world’s best warriors. When the planet is threatened by King Piccolo and his offspring Piccolo, Goku seeks help from Earth’s gods. Later, Goku makes the ultimate sacrifice to save the Earth from his brother Raditz. Still, he trains in the afterlife under King Kai’s tutelage to keep him safe from the other incoming Saiyans, Nappa, and Vegeta. Later, he transforms into a Super Saiyan and defeats the powerful tyrant Freeza. This sets the tone for the rest of the Dragon Ball series, as the characters’ enemies become more powerful than the last, necessitating additional training. Dragon Ball Super is set in a multiverse of twelve numbered universes. Each is ruled by benevolent and malevolent deities. Respectively called the Supreme Kai and Gods of Destruction, commanded by a superior being called Gran Zeno, who watches over them. Together with the Grand Priest, the father of Angels, on the multiverse. Except for parts of Dragon Ball Super, almost the entire Dragon Ball series takes place in Universe 7. Several planets in Universe 7, including a fictionalized Earth where humans live and Planet Vegeta, the homeworld. A powerful and destructive race among the Saiyans. Angels, Demons, Androids, Tuffles, and Namekians are among the races that inhabit Universe 7. In this Dragon Ball series, humans are a weak race present in the universe. Goku, the protagonist, is raised as a human on Earth until he discovers he is a Saiyan from Planet Vegeta.

The inspirations of the designer Akira Toriyama

Akira Toriyama enjoyed Hong Kong martial arts films, particularly Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon in 1973 and Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master in 1978. And he wanted to create manga-inspired martial arts films. This led Toriyama to start the 1983 one-shot manga Dragon Boy, which he later retrained into the Dragon Ball series. Toriyama loosely modeled Dragon Ball’s plot and characters on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, with Goku as Sun Wukong, Son Goku in Japanese, Bulma as Tang Sanzang, Oolong as Zhu Bajie, and Yamcha as Sha Wujing. Toriyama wanted to combine elements from Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee’s kung fu movies with the basic theme of Journey to the West to create a story with some kung fu. The title Dragon Ball series was inspired by entering the Dragon and Bruceploitation kung fu knockoff movies that often had the word Dragon in the title. The fight scenes were influenced by the Jackie Chan movies. Because it was serialized in a shonen manga magazine, he added the Dragon Balls as a game-like activity of gathering without considering what the characters would want. His Dragon Ball concept was inspired by the Japanese epic novel Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. The heroes are tasked with collecting eight Buddhist prayer beads, which Toriyama adapted into seven Dragon Balls. He initially thought it would take a year once the Dragon Balls were collected. Toriyama said that although the stories are purposely easy to understand, he specifically aimed the Dragon Ball series at older readers than those of his previous serial, Dr. Slump. He also wanted to separate himself from the Western influences common in Dr. Slump. Deliberately opting for Chinese scenery, referencing Chinese buildings and photographs of China his wife had purchased. Toriyama wanted the Dragon Ball series to be set in an Asian-influenced world. Drawing inspiration from diverse Asian cultures, including Japanese, Chinese, South Asian, Central Asian, Arab and Indonesian cultures. The island where Tenkaichi Budōkai, the most potent martial arts tournament under the skies, is held, is modeled after Bali in Indonesia. He, his wife, and his assistant visited in mid-1985. He used photos of Africa to create the area of Bobbidi’s spaceship. Toriyama was also inspired by the genes of The Arabian Nights. During the first few chapters of the manga, Toriyama editor Kazuhiko Torishima commented that Goku looked straightforward. To counteract this, he introduced several characters, such as Master Roshi and Krillin and the Tenkaichi Budokai martial arts tournament. When the first Tenkaichi Budōkai began, the Dragon Ball series became popular, having recalled the races and games in Dr. Slump. Toriyama had Goku lose the first two tournaments while planning an eventual victory, anticipating that readers would expect him to win. As the manga progressed, this allowed for more character development. The Spartan X video game Kung-Fu Master in the West inspired Muscle Tower in the Red Ribbon Army storyline. As the player ascends a tower, enemies appear very quickly. The game was inspired by Jackie Chan’s Wheels on Meals and Bruce Lee’s Game of Death. He then created Piccolo as a truly evil villain and, as a result, called that arc the most interesting to draw. When Goku and his friends had risen to the top of the Earth’s power rankings, they turned their attention to extraterrestrial foes like the Saiyans. And Goku, who was born on Earth, was retconned as a Saiyan sent to Earth as a baby. Freeza took over planets forcibly to resell them. He created the Ginyu Force to give the Dragon Ball series more balance. He found the escalating enemies challenging to deal with. Toriyama was initially concerned that Goku’s facial expressions as a Super Saiyan made him look like a villain when he created the Super Saiyan transformation during the Freeza arc. However, it was deemed a good idea because anger brought about the change. Because it was easier for Toriyama’s assistant to draw, Goku’s Super Saiyan form has blonde hair and piercing eyes, similar to Bruce Lee’s paralyzing gaze. During the Cell arc, Toriyama later added time travel. However, he revealed that he was having difficulty with it. He only thought about what he wanted to do that week and discussed it with his second editor, Yu Kondo. After his victory over Cell, Toriyama intended for Gohan to take on the lead role in the Dragon Ball series. He later changed his mind, thinking the character was unfit for the part. Toriyama later revealed that he made Goku grow up to draw fight scenes more easily. It was unusual for a manga series’ main character to change drastically, even though his first editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, was initially opposed. To avoid attracting residents and destroying buildings, Toriyama had the characters fight in uninhabited areas in the manga. Toriyama claimed that he did not plan the story’s details, which resulted in strange occurrences and inconsistencies later in the series, such as the characters’ colors changing in the middle of the story. Toriyama has continued to add to the story, mostly background information on the universe, through guidebooks published by Shueisha since the completion of the Dragon Ball series. Toriyama stated in the second half of the series that he was more interested in coming up with the story than drawing it. With him simplifying the lines, the battles became more intense.
